When in doubt about getting the right nutrients and the correct amount of omega-3 in our diets, one of the first things we do is reach for the fish oil supplements. Not so fast. Because most of the fish today is contaminated with lead and other toxins, it's probably best to choose a fish oil supplement but only if you choose wisely.
Carlson's fish oil and Cod Liver Oil are good choices. This brand has completely purified their supplements so you can be sure they're good for you. There are other pure supplements on the market, just check for quality before you buy.
Healthy meat
For optimum health, change the type of meat you eat. Most beef you buy at your local grocery store or eat at a restaurant is grain-fed right before slaughter to fatten it up. This makes the meat high in omega-6 and lower in omega-3. Omega-6 and omega-3 are both healthy, but only as long as you get them in the right ratio. The typical American diet is too high in omega-6 fatty acids, those that come from a diet high in saturated fats, sugar, and processed foods.
To get the right ratios, you might want to try free-range omega-3 rich ostrich or bison meat. Search out a source that offers you meat that is mostly free-range and grass-fed.
Because of the contaminated fish, more doctors report their patients, who eat fish on a regular basis, are showing high levels of contamination. You need either to buy fish from dealers proving their fish are free of detectable levels of mercury and toxins or choose one of the recommended fish oil supplements.
Healthy oils
Most Americans grew up with margarine, sunflower, corn, soy, safflower, and canola oil. Wouldn't you know it? These are the oils and fats to avoid. Don't be disheartened though, they're easy to replace.
Instead of these hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats, switch to unsaturated fats like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, and organic butter. These foods are available to most people regardless of where you live.
It isn't difficult to eat healthy; it just takes a little extra effort and the effort to change your food choices. Gradually add these healthy foods and supplements into your diet to be sure you're getting all the omega-3 you need -- the right way.
