Can Omega 3 Help Control ADHD?

The correct levels of Omega 3 can provide many health benefits including lowering high cholesterol, reducing high blood pressure, preventing heart disease, reducing the risk of diabetes. But did you know that Omega 3 is good for your brain and may be just the thing to help relieve ADHD symptoms in children?

Omega 3 and ADHD

While researching and studying all of the cardiovascular health benefits of Omega 3, a funny thing happened. It was discovered that Omega 3 has many benefits for the brain too. One of the illnesses these benefits impact is ADHD.

Virtually unheard of 25 years ago, currently 8.7% of all children between the ages of 8 and 15 have ADHD to some extent. If you or someone you love is affected by ADHD, you know the problems and stress it can cause.

What if...there was a natural substance that could reduce the symptoms of ADHD? Researchers now believe, due to studies, that Omega 3 can do just that. Scientists have discovered that children with ADHD have low levels of Omega 3 and this has been proven to lower the concentration of certain brain chemicals that are related to attention and motivation.

In one study involving 117 children, who were given Omega 3 supplements, improvements were found in the children's reading ability, spelling, and behavior. In a similar study, children who were given supplements of Omega 3 were shown to have less physical aggression.

If you are wary of giving your child supplements due to fear of overdosing, choose healthy foods that are high in Omega 3 instead. Begin including in your child's diet several types of fish including: mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and wild caught salmon.

Other foods to include are:

Flaxseeds
Walnuts
Cauliflower, boiled
Cabbage, shredded and boiled
Romaine lettuce
Broccoli, steamed
Brussel sprouts, boiled
Winter squash, baked
Tofu, raw
Collard greens, boiled
Spinach, boiled
Shrimp,
Strawberries
Green beans
Raspberries

Some of these foods, you may have to be particularly creative with to include but others, like strawberries and raspberries will be favorites. Experiment and see how many of these healthy foods you can include in your child's diet each week to improve his brain health and reduce the symptoms of ADHD.
