People often wonder about omega 3 side effects. Any substance can have side effects, even those essential to our health. Failing to do so can result in too much omega 3, which can lead to omega 3 supplements such as:
-Fishy breath or body odor (only in extreme cases)
-Increased risk of bleeding — omega 3 can act as a blood thinner (similar to aspirin), and therefore it can make you bleed more easily.
-In patients with diabetes, fish oil supplements can cause complications — in fact, doctors recommend that if you have diabetes, you avoid these supplements altogether.
-Increased risk of certain types of cholesterol
The side effects of omega 3 supplements can also cause less dangerous but more embarrassing problems, such as nausea, belching, bloating, diarrhea, and gas. However, these side effects are very rare. Usually, they come from taking way too much omega 3 or from using very poor quality supplements.
You can avoid omega 3 side effects by making sure you use high quality, pharmaceutical grade omega 3 supplements. The cheap ones you buy at the pharmacy are more likely to cause these sorts of problems. Also, follow the directions on the label (or take them as your doctor suggests) to avoid overdosing on fatty acids.
There are not a lot of side effects associated with omega 3s, but there are some. As with any substance, you can take too much or abuse it. Obviously, this is not how you help your body maintain its health. Be careful with your supplements, and you can avoid omega 3 side effects.
