Unclog Your Arteries with Omega-3
Are these doctors right? Can Omega-3 reduce your risk of heart disease?
Is Omega-3 your answer to unclogging your arteries and being worry-free when it comes to atherosclerosis? Some scientists think so. According to scientists, eating a diet high in marine essential fatty acids can help protect you against heart attacks and stroke.
Protect Yourself Against Atherosclerosis
More than 81,100,000 Americans have heart disease caused by Atherosclerosis. This deadly disease is the buildup of plaque inside your arteries and is the cause of heart attacks, angina pectoris or chest pains, strokes, and heart failure.
Scientists now believe that eating a diet high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids can reduce your risk of atherosclerosis. In 2007, seventeen doctors in a cross-sectional study tested this theory. The study involved 281 Japanese men born and living in Japan, 306 white men born and living in the U.S., and 281 Japanese-American men born and living in the U.S. All the men were between the ages of 40-49. The result of the test showed that the Japanese men had lower levels of atherosclerosis than the other two groups.
The Japanese men also had twice the blood levels of Omega-3 as the other two groups. These doctors believe that it's the high levels of marine Omega-3 that protects the Japanese men from heart disease.
Assistant Professor Akira Sekikawa at the University of Pittsburg states, "The death rate from coronary heart disease in Japan has always been puzzlingly low. Our study suggests that the very low rates of coronary heart disease among Japanese living in Japan may be due to their lifelong high consumption of fish."
Japanese men have an intake of 1.3 grams of Omega-3 per day while the white men and Japanese-American men had only 0.2 grams per day. To protect yourself against atherosclerosis, increase the amount of fish you eat. Before taking fish oil supplements, talk to your doctor about this study and how Omega-3 might be the answer to preventing heart disease.
